WEG eventing: Germany in team gold after Ingrid Klimke’s jumping penalties removed

  • Germany are in the lead in the team eventing at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games after Ingrid Klimke’s jumping penalties were removed.

The results online soon after the competition ended showed Ingrid having 20 jumping penalties with FRH Escada JS. As Ingrid recorded a counting score for the Germans with or without these penalties, their appearance pushed Germany to team silver behind Britain.

Ingrid had a wild ride through the first water and could have been given the penalties either for running out at the third part (pictured) before taking the alternative (but she would not have penalties if she was deemed not to have presented there) or for crossing her tracks at this point. She also briefly had 20 penalties at fence 27, a corner, appear on her scorecard during her round.

When the rider spoke to the press after her round, she believed that she had not had any jumping faults, so it is likely she and the German team appealed the penalties when they appeared on the results.

The results now show Germany in gold on 177.9 penalties, Britain in silver on 186.8 and Australia in bronze on 226.8. This means Britain is just over two showjumps behind the team gold.

Tomorrow’s horse inspection is at 7.30pm at Haras du Pin, after which the horses will be driven in convoy to the D’Ornano stadium in central Caen. The showjumping starts there at 2.30pm.
