Meet Amanda Steege: the rider who bagged top honours in one of the biggest hunter jumper competitions
Meet Amanda Steege, the newly crowned $50,000 World Champion Hunter Rider
The Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) attracts top riders from around the world every January through to March. For those of us in Great Britain, who are typically dealing with cold, wet and wintery conditions at this time of year, heading off to the sunshine state sounds incredibly appealing, with temperatures in the 20s most days.
The show is held at Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC), 3400 Equestrian Club Drive Wellington, FL 33414. It has 18 competition rings, with associated warm-up areas. There are two main venues — one hosts the WEF, with jumping classes from young horses right up to international five-star classes, plus hunters and equitation.
About half a mile away is the second venue, which holds the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF). Occasionally, just to confuse things, jumping takes place here too. The dressage classes also run from national level right up to a CDI5*.
The show is 12 weeks long. Technically it’s a series of different shows, running from Wednesday to Sunday each week.
More than 6000 horses compete at the show over the 12 weeks and there are 256 permanent stables on site to keep them happily housed.
The Winter Equestrian Festival is livestreamed online throughout the show. Check out our guide on how to watch Winter Equestrian Festival livestream.
