Fell pony syndrome being targeted by scientists
Scientists are undertaking ground-breaking research into a fatal genetic defect that has been killing fell ponies for generations
The Fell pony is a working breed of native pony originating in the north England, more specifically Cumberland and Westmorland in Cumbria and Northumberland. It was originally bred on Fell farms of the northwest and is now a popular choice for riding and driving.
BREED TRAITS:
Not to exceed 14 hands (142.2 cms) Coat colouring may be black, brown, bay and grey. Chestnuts, piebalds and skewbalds are debarred. They should have plenty of fine hair at heels (coarse hair objectionable) and mane and tails are left to grow long. Movement should focus on the trot, with a well-balanced all-round stride, with good knee and hock action.
