Top riders prepare for Nations Cup battle in Aachen

  • Eight countries line up for this evening’s FEI Nations Cup in Aachen. For several riders, including those in the German squad, this is the final chance to impress Olympic team selectors.

Great Britain, whose Olympic team has already been decided, is drawn seventh. Rob Hoekstra’s squad consists of Nick Skelton on Carlo 273, Guy Williams with Titus II, Scott Brash riding Intertoy Z and Michael Whitaker on GIG Amai.

Ireland have the advantage of last draw and Robert Splaine has chosen Denis Lynch on Lantinus 3, Dermott Lennon riding Loughview Lou-Lou, Billy Twomey with Je T’Aime Flamenco and Cian O’Connor riding Blue Loyd 12 for this, the fifth leg of the Top League Nations Cup.

Aachen, considered one of the toughest competitions, will be a crucial point gatherer for Ireland, who currently sit bottom of the leader board.

The Brits got off to a good start in Aachen on Wednesday when Nick Skelton won one of the opening classes on his Olympic ride Big Star.
