Former international show jumper, Nick Skelton, has bought his local pub
Former top British show jumper, Nick Skelton, has purchased the “Durham Ox” public house in Shrewley,Warwickshire – the village in which he grew up – following his retirement from top flight show jumping.
Nick was forced into early retirement after suffering a broken neck as the result of a fall in September 2000. He has since forged an impressive career as a show jumping trainer from his base in Lowsonford, Warwickshire.
However, the idea of owning a pub appealed to Nick even when he was riding.
“Running a pub always interested me and it was a case of waiting for the right one to come up. The Durham Ox is perfect as it is in my local village.”
Nick has drunk in the Durham Ox for many years and decided to buy the pub in together with friend and business partner Tony Saunders.
The Durham Ox has been extensively refurbished and officially re-opens on 20 April. The pub now boasts a 100-seater restaurant, serving traditional and contemporary food, as well as a local’s bar.
Although you may see Nick in theDurham Ox, one thing you can be sure of is he won’t be pulling any pints, as he intends to employ experienced staff to run the business.
