Juniors take centre stage at the Blue Chip Championships

  • Jessica Baugh headed the Blue Chip pony novice at the Blue Chip Championships riding The Artful Dodger VI.

“I had to learn my jump-off track quickly after jumping Carramore Champ in the outside ring,” said early drawn Jessica.

She beat 20 others in the final jump-off, whittled down from 82 initial starters. The Irish bred nine-year-old Artful Dodger has previously only experienced pony club and Trailblazers events with owner Lucy Turvey.

“Lucy’s now at university and I started showjumping him in September,” said Jessica, 16, who is trained by her aunt Heather Gunn.

Anya Brown was fastest four-faulter by more than three sec in the novice, but she made no mistakes in the next championship. Slicing corners at the gallop, Anya secured the Blue Chip pony discovery title on the ten-year-old By Chance VI.

“I always seem to miss out on winning a rug,” said Anya, 15, who took second in last year’s Blue Chip sapphire. “It is great to finally win one in my last pony year.”

The pair will be out jumping again next weekend. “I need one more double clear to jump in pony newcomers second rounds; qualifying for Horse of the Year Show is my dream.”
