Guy claims grand prix victory

  • Guy Williams rode the round of his life to take his biggest ever victory in the grand prix at HOYS. The man from Kent was in inspired form in Saturday’s accumulator and he carried this on to this class.

Only six went clear over a big course and fifth-drawn Guy jumped the first double clear with a sensible performance during which he took the longer options but kept the big Hamlet moving all the way.

When the last to go, Nick Skelton, took a tight early turn, he and Arko looked the odds-on winners, but Guy’s round was put in context when even this great pairing could not beat him.

“He’s a scopey horse with a big stride and he’s naturally quick,” said Guy, who has formed a tremendous partnership with Italian Gianne Govoni since getting the ride a year ago.

William Funnell’s consistency was enough to take the leading rider award, while Alex Rident was the leading lady.
