Horses of a different colour parade through Cheltenham

  • They are not the usual thoroughbreds you expect to see at Cheltenham, but 10 life-size horse sculptures will be positioned throughout the town from 1 August-15 October.

Each horse has been sponsored by a different organisation — including the University of Gloucestershire and Cheltenham racecourse — and decorated by artists, including PJ Crook, Sam Charles Hodgson, Alison Little, Lincoln Seligman and Carrie Reichardt.

Equestrian artist Sally Lancaster has decorated a horse (pictured) for the Racing Post.

“I’ve painted the horse a pale grey and then painted 12 individual images on it of Cheltenham legends — including Kauto Star, Best Mate, Desert Orchid and Arkle,” she said.

“It took 14 days straight and I’m really looking forward to seeing them all on display.”

The parade is being run by Cheltenham Art Gallery.

Sophia Wilson from the gallery said: “It’s Cheltenham Festival’s centenary and we wanted to celebrate that with art.”
