The final horse championship of the show sees a seasoned partnership reign over some new combinations. Find out how the championship went down…
JAYNE Ross and Kay Cambell’s exceptional Casino III triumphed in the riding horse championship, held under the midday sun in the Castle Arena at the 2021 Royal Windsor Horse Show.
An eruption of applause came from the connections of this superb mare, now 14, when she was called forward as champion, ahead of the winning large, Frazer Atherden riding the Leeman Family’s eight-year-old Kellythorpes Obsession.
Casino, by Painted Black, started her 2021 Windsor campaign with a top pull in the small riding horses which was held in the quieter Copper Horse Arena in the morning, before taking to the atmospheric main ring.
“She’s out of this world,” said Jayne. “She rises to the occasion every single time. She loves a big crowd and the sun was out which made it even better. She gave me the ride of a lifetime today.
“She had a 20 minute saunter at home this morning; we’re lucky enough to only live 40 minutes away from the show ground so we can work the horses before we head over. We kept her a little bit light of work as the ground is a bit tacky and muddy so we wanted to keep her fresh and light.”
A Windsor morning for Jayne starts a 3am, and the team have enjoyed a fabulous week in the show ring:
“It’s been a super busy week, but what a lovely way to finish,” added Jayne, who secured the novice hunter championship earlier in the week riding Ellie Harper’s Wall Street.
The winners joining the champion and reserve choices in the championship were winning novice Shildon’s Regal Gold (Adam Forster) and top amateur Happy Valentines (Heather Rothwell).
