Fence by fence: check out photos of every fence on the Bicton CCI4*-L cross-country course *H&H Plus*

  • Check out photos of every fence on the CCI4*-L cross-country course at Bicton Horse Trials…

The Bicton Horse Trials cross-country course for the CCI4*-L, supported by Chedington, consists of 28 numbered fences.

The course is designed by Helen West, with help from Mark Phillips.

The cross-country for the Chedington CCI4*-L and the under-25 CCI4*-L is marked with blue numbers. The purple numbers are for the Chedington CCI4*-S.

Horses will probably take five strides between these two big tables.

    Fence 5: W.H. Bond Sawbench

    Fence 6: Skinny Wedge

Fence 7ab: Stump to Fallen Corner

Riders curve left-handed after this fence, probably on four strides, to the b element, which can be glimpsed behind the tree.

This corner is the direct route at fence 12b.

The alternative fence 12b involves turning right-handed to a brush corner and then taking a long loop round to return to the onward track.

    Fence 13: Tall n Narrow

    Fence 14: Pig Arc Rolls

Riders can choose whether to jump on the left-hand or right-hand side.

    Fence 15abcd: Course Designer’s Conundrum

The most direct route is to jump the rail in (fence 15a), then the ditch (fence 15bc) and then the left-hand corner (fence 15d).

The long route involves passing the whole complex and looping back round to jump the ditch in reverse (fence 15a), then jumping a rail (fence 15b) and then the ditch (fence 15c) and on to the right-hand corner (fence 15d). There is considerably more space between elements on this route and the fences are on a straight line.

    Fence 16: Berenberg Trakhener

    Fence 17: Fallen Log

    Fence 18: Double Brush

Fence 19: Bicton College Monkey Puzzle

Fence 20ab: Arrowhead to TripleBar MIM

It’s likely horses will take three strides between elements here.

Fence 21ab: Clinton Devon Drop to Skinny

A black flag alternative to the skinny has been added.

    Fence 22: White Rails

Fence 23a and 24ab: HTSG Open Oxer and HTSG Brush Dilemma

This fence was originally numbered as fence 23abc, hence why the numbers on the pictures don’t tally with the new numbering.
