Two horses have died and three riders were injured after a tragic sequence of events that started in a South Yorkshire wood on Friday 22 May.
One horse being ridden through woodland at Grenoside, near Sheffield bolted, and ran onto the road. As its 46 year-old rider tried to regain control, it startled two other horses being ridden along Middle Lane, Grenoside.
Their two riders were thrown, suffering cuts and bruises, and one horse suffered a broken leg and had to be put down at the scene. The bolting horse was hit by an oncoming car, resulting in fatal injuries. Its rider suffered a serious leg injury and was taken to the Northern General Hospital.
