Feathers fly in UK’s first shire horse race

  • Racegoers were treated to a different type of horsepower when eight shire horses lined up for the Flying Feathers Maiden Stakes as part of Lingfield Park’s annual Countryside Raceday on Saturday (15 June).

The shire horse race was organised to raise awareness for the endangered breed, which is on the Rare Breeds Survival Trust’s “at risk” list because there are so few breeding mares.

The winner was Joey owned by Hurst Green Shires and ridden by Mark Grant.
