Shetland pony celebrates 40th birthday with giant cake

  • A Welsh pony is celebrating a very special birthday today (24 June) — and with a cake rumoured to be the biggest one ever made for an equine.

Toby the Shetland has reached the amazing age of 40 and to mark the occasion is having a party with his fellow residents at Happy Horse Retirement Home in the Brecon Beacons.

Centre owner Nicky van Dijk said: “Toby is such a character and is certainly fond of the ladies! He whinnies to all the mares to catch their attention and is top dog of the 46 horses we have here.

“Despite his age he still has lots of spirit — and a great appetite!”

Toby was rescued as a foal when found abandoned on a mountainside in deep snow. His owner cared for him for 32 years until passing away eight years ago, since when Tony has lived with his friends at the Happy Horse Retirement home.
