Reward for information over hit-and-run horse death

  • The New Forest Verderers are offering a £1,000 reward for information about a hit-and-run driver who killed a bay filly last weekend.

The pony was found dead at 7am on Saturday (29 May) at Black Gutter on the B3078.

Debris at the scene indicated the filly was hit by a grey BMW car. The driver did not report the accident to the police.

A police examiner has said the car will have front-end damage.

Last year, 65 ponies were killed and 26 injured on New Forest roads.

Spokesman for the Verderers Colin Draper told H&H: “Most of the accidents are caused by local drivers. Familiarity seems to breed a lack of concern and you often see drivers whipping past ponies and other animals at 40mph.

“Deaths like this are very upsetting for us and often avoidable.”
