New record price set at Tattersalls

  • The two-year-old colt, Firebreak, breaks the European record price for a colt or gelding in training at Tattersalls

The European record price for a colt or gelding in training was smashed on Tuesday evening (30 October) when the Group 2 winner, Firebreak, was sold for 525,000 guineas at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale.

This was more than double the previous record price at a Tattersalls Horses In Training sale, which was held by Atmospheric who sold for 235,000 guineas last year.

Trained by Ian Balding, Firebreak has won four of his six starts for Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds. He is officially rated as the equal-third top two-year-old colt in Britain.

Firebreak drew an opening bid of 70,000 guineas from eventual underbidder Alan Ngai, who trains in Macau. John Ferguson finally secured the colt for 525,000 guineas, and said the colt would go to Dubai for the winter.

By top rated miler Charnwood Forest, Firebreak is the half-brother to five other winners out of the Stakes placed mare Breakaway.

The second day of the Horses-in-Training sale saw 271 lots sold for a total of 4,318,200 guineas, with an average price of 15,934.
