New equine council for Wales

  • Equestrian organisations in Wales have joined forces to form the Welsh Equine Council — otherwise known as Cyngor Ceffylau Cymraeg.

The council will encompass all equine organisations within Wales, and those that have already signed up include the British Driving Society (Wales), British Riding Clubs, Riding for the Disabled (Wales), the Side Saddle Association, the Pony Club, the Welsh Pony & Cob Society and the Welsh Trekking & Riding Association.

Wendy Davies, development officer for BHS Cymru, who has been working on the project for two years, says: “With the Welsh National Assembly becoming more prominent in everybody’s lives, we want one voice for equine organisations.”

Members will lobby the Assembly on issues such as horse passports, minimum values, access and road safety. The council will also campaign for increased funding for equine issues in Wales.

The first meeting of the council, which will meet four times a year, will be held soon. For more information (tel: 01970 617730).
