The RSPCA is appealing for help after a young horse was dumped in a rubbish bag and left to die in Belvedere, Kent last Wednesday (15 January).
A dog walker spotted the foal’s nose poking out of the yellow bag in an alleyway next to The Leather Bottle pub and alerted the RSPCA.
The horse had collapsed and was struggling to breathe. He had to be put down the following morning as he was in such a poor condition.
“It looks like someone has reversed a truck down the start of the alleyway and just chucked the bag off the back of their truck and driven away knowing the horse would lay there suffering until an eventual death,” said RSPCA inspector Ellen Thomas.
“He was extremely emaciated and, while we managed to get the horse to sit up, he was too weak to stand.”
The skewbald was transported to a vet, but he was put to sleep the next morning to avoid further suffering.
“The vet said that the horse had such a severe worm burden that its little body couldn’t cope,” Inspector Thomas added.
“How someone can dump a live horse in a dark alley knowing that they would be leaving it there to suffer and die is beyond me. It was an upsetting scene. I have never seen anything like it.”
