Joe Turi loses fight for life


  • International show jumper Joe Turi has died in a Budapest hospital after sustaining severe head injuries in a motorcycle accident at his home in Nagykoros, Hungary.

    Turi, who came to top-level show jumping in the 1980s after taking part in a display by the Hungarian Csikos trick riders at Olympia, was unconscious after the accidentwhich happened over the Easter weekend. He had several CT scans to try to ascertain the extent of the damage to his skull but sadly lost his fight for life earlier today.

    Turi took British nationality and competed for Britain on Michael Bullman’s stallion Vital at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. He won the Hickstead Derby with the same horse in 1990. He returned to Hungary in the late 1990’s and represented his native country in the 2000 Olympics.

    Jacky Wood, BSJA chief executive,says: “Joe was always full of vitality with a huge appetite for life. He made an enormous contribution to British show jumping success and will be sadly missed by all his friends in the UK.”
