Jean Clayden and her striking Hackney, Glenshane Prince, finally took the title that has eluded them five times at the Horse of the Year Show.
Having qualified every year since she began showing “Pops” as a four-year-old, Jean has never been able to pull out his best performance for this all-important season finale — until now.
This year, his relaxed and confident manner and foot-perfect performance claimed the title of Xerox Business Services Harness Horse of the Year.
“It’s the show I’ve always felt nervous at,” says Jean. “Undoubtedly, that transmits down the reins, and I’ve really tried to conquer it. We’ve worked such a long time for this title — it’s the best yet!”
In their six years of showing, Jean and Glenshane Prince have taken 98 championships at shows up and down the country, including the 2002 Osborne Refrigerators Championship.
Jan Manning took the Harness Pony of the Year title from seven other qualifiers with her pretty Welsh section B, Gunthwaite Tailrace, at only their second appearance at HOYS.
Jan has owned the rising eight-year-old since he was four and has shown him for three seasons after he was produced consistently for her by Gary Docking’s yard.
