The first charcoal feed supplement for horses launched earlier this year is growing from strength to strength.
“Happy Tummy” claims to maintain a good digestive system by absorbing toxins and intestinal gases. It is a non-medicinal product.
The charcoal supplement was produced by physicist Dr Keith Foster of Fine Fettle Feeds, who took two years to perfect his product.
“This has been very worthwhile as it is proving to be an absolute breakthrough in animal welfare,” he told H&H.
“It has the power to help with all ailments which stem from imbalance in the animal’s digestive system.”
Charcoal is an age-old digestive remedy, that works by binding toxins into its structure.
“I basically found a way to make it bind better,” explained Dr Foster.
“It can be used in competition, because it is completely chemically inert — or as the BHA put it, passive.”
Happy Tummy is currently available only by mail order from Fine Fettle Feeds, but Dr Foster hopes to distribute through a network of stockists next year.
Prices range from £34 for a 3-litre tub, to £95 for a 75-litre bag.
