Farewell to… breeder and judge, SR Martin

  • The prolific breeder and judge, SR Martin, died on 6 June at the age of 91.

Samuel Robert Martin – known as SR – bred both National Hunt and sport horses at his Ashleigh Stud in Co Down, including the three-times Hickstead Derby winner Monsanta, ridden by Michael Whitaker.

He was equally in demand as a judge, travelling all over the British Isles, and was chief steward of the Royal Dublin Show. In 1995 he was awarded the OBE for services to equestrianism.

SR Martin leaves a wife, Margery, two sons and three granddaughters.
