Donkeys across the country are going head to head this week in the finals of Britain’s best beach donkey competition.
Run by Devon-based charity the Donkey Sanctuary, the last heats of the finals will be held today (Thursday, 27 August) at Great Yarmouth.
The Donkey Sanctuary’s Amber Brennan is judging the competition.
So far Amber has judged donkeys in Weymouth, Brixham, Paignton, Llanelli, Aberdovey and Blackpool.
Yesterday she judged donkeys in Filey and she will be in Skegness and Great Yarmouth today.
Miss Brennan says: “I am thrilled to be the national judge, but I think it is going to be a tough challenge. I know that owners are extremely passionate about their beach donkey work and it is their livelihood, so they will make every effort to win.
“To triumph in this competition means an official seal of approval from the world’s largest charity committed to the welfare of donkeys.”
The awards are based on the donkey’s welfare and Amber will be checking hooves, eyes, teeth and tack. The winners will have to be placid, gentle and above all enjoy their work.
The donkeys are battling it out for the titles of Britain’s best individual beach donkey, Britain’s best group of beach donkeys, Britain’s group with the best feet and Britain’s best beach donkey resort.
The final judging will take place in Great Yarmouth at 4pm and the winner will be announced on Monday (31 August).
