Popular racehorse Denman has been retired.
The winner of the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup suffered a tendon injury during training.
Known by fans as “The Tank”, the 11-year-old was being aimed at the Lexus Chase later this month.
But he “pulled up a bit sore” yesterday morning (Thursday 8 December) and trainer Paul Nicholls today (Friday 9 December) announced the horse’s retirement.
“A scan revealed tiny damage to his near fore tendon, so this morning marks the end of an era for Ditcheat,” said Paul in his blog.
“We immediately informed his owner Paul Barber who, after consulting those close to him, took the decision to retire him. It was the only course of action to take.
“We are all devastated but Denman has given us some wonderful moments on the track.”
He was also famous for his rivalry with stablemate Kauto Star.
Denman won 14 races including the Hennessy Gold Cup twice, the Lexus Chase and the SunAlliance.
