Britain takes on US military

  • British military riders are competing in the US this weekend at the North American International Military Horse Show at Fort Reno, Oklahoma.

Teams of four from the Queen’s Household Cavalry, the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and the West Yorkshire Mounted Police will join Canadian and US teams.

Mark Avison of the Household Cavalry says: “The riders compete in skill at arms and show jumping, where they are also up against civilians.

“They spend weekdays trialling US military horses. Each team is allocated a pool of five horses — one ‘good’, three ‘mediocre’ and one ‘a challenge’.”

The event is the result of a link between the Household Cavalry and the Blue Devils Horse Platoon, Michigan, who regularly compete in the tent pegging at the Royal Windsor Horse Show.
