The emaciated body of a dead grey pony has been found dumped under a tarpaulin in East Sussex.
The animal was found in Buckhurst Lane, Wadhurst, on Sunday, 20 February.
A householder heard dogs barking at 2am and the next morning found the dead pony outside the house.
The body was on a board with poles underneath as if it had been carried from somewhere else.
“The pony’s bones were very prominent, and it had probably been living in a stable, because it had dirty shavings down one side,” said RSPCA animal welfare officer Zoe Ballard.
“It was a native type pony, and the body was left in a quiet rural lane.”
The RSPCA is now appealing for information, believing the dumping may be linked to several dead horses found in quiet “beauty spots” in the bordering county of Kent in the latter part of last year.
