Army marches to Sandown for Royal Artillery Steeplechase

  • A battery of 70 soldiers, complete with guns and equipment, is to march from the centre of Esher, Surrey, to Sandown Park racecourse next Friday (18 February) in time for the Royal Artillery Steeplechase.

The soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Artillery will leave Esher Police Station at 10.30am before proceeding down the High Street and into Sandown Park.

They will be accompanied by the mounted King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, the 42-man strong Royal Artillery Band, local cadets and veterans.

Last year the 2010 Heroes Parade was well supported and organisers are expecting an even larger crowd this year.

The feature race of the afternoon is the Royal Artillery Gold Cup before which injured serving soldiers will demonstrate their riding skills.

Only horses that are owned or leased by serving, or past, members of the Royal Artillery may run. Jockeys must also be amateurs who are past or present members of the Armed Services.

People are urged to turn out to show their appreciation for the courage, dedication and professionalism of our Armed Forces.
