AP McCoy makes BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist

  • AP McCoy has made the shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

The 15-times champion jockey is one of 10 finalists up for the 2010 award — which is voted for by the public on Sunday, 19 December.

Last year, after AP became the first jockey to ride more than 3,000 jumps winners, the horseworld was disappointed to hear the champion wasn’t even nominated for the award.

And in April, after AP won the Grand National on his 15th attempt, a Facebook campaign to name him as BBC Sports Personality of the Year was set up, supported by around 13,500 fans.

Only three equestrians have ever won the award — David Broome in 1960, Princess Anne in 1971 and Zara Phillips in 2006. And just two jockeys have made the roll of honour — AP (2002) and Frankie Dettori (1996), who both came third.

Last month, sports editors from 30 newspapers around the country were asked to put forward their nominations for the award.

The top 10 finalists — including AP — will then be voted for by the public during the live show from the LG Arena in Birmingham on BBC One, 7-9pm on 19 December. Voting details are announced during the show.

    The full shortlist:

    • Mark Cavendish — cycling

    • Graeme McDowell — golf
