Winners of Countryside Alliance’s hunting photography competition

  • Hunt supporters and photography fans have been capturing hunting at its best for the Countryside Alliance’s (CA) “Hunting under the Act” amateur photography competition.

The winners were announced last week on the 15th anniversary of the CA’s Hyde Park Rally on 10 July 1997.

“The competition was launched earlier this year to show that hunts are still together and are united for hunting’s future, despite the presence of the Hunting Act,” said a CA spokesman.

Joint winners of the prize were Wynnstay Hound and Child, by Tracy Broadbent and A February Morning with the Axe Vale, by 17-year-old Lewis Gillingham.

“We always go to see the hunt and my husband rides, so I often take pictures,” Tracy told H&H. “The picture is of my two-year-old son William.

“He loves animals and the hounds are always very friendly. I’m really excited to have won.”

The competition attracted more than 200 entries.

“It was a real pleasure to see so many photographs that really sum up hunting’s broad appeal,” said H&H hunting editor and judge Catherine Austen.

“The winning photos are totally different – a classic cover shot, with lovely light and sharply in focus, and a hugely appealing shot of a small child hugging a hound, both of whom are clearly in raptures.”

CA chairman Barney White-Spunner, who led the judging panel, added: “We were impressed to see so much encapsulated in the entries – from hunting’s tradition to the beauty of the animals and landscapes, and the enjoyment and passion that hunting inspires in its followers.”

The winning photos will be featured in the CA’s autumn magazine, out in September.
