Hoey is new Countryside Alliance chairman

  • The Countryside Alliance announced today that Kate Hoey is to be its new Chairman as of this autumn, taking over from John Jackson.

Hoey, a Labour MP since 1989, was brought up in rural Northern Ireland and has a long standing interest in rural and environmental issues.

At the official announcement at the CLA Game Fair at Belvoir Castle today, she said: “The Alliance’s campaigns for the sustainability of the countryside have had a significant impact on the political landscape. It’s a great honour and a great challenge, to take on this role at such an important time for the countryside.”

The decision was also greeted warmly by the Middle Way Group. Co-chair Lembit Opik said: “Kate’s determination and skill will undoubtedly help the Alliance challenge existing prejudiced law and amend it into more sensible and workable legislation. She’ll also tackle other issues facing rural communities including affordable housing, CAP reform and public services.

“As ever, the Middle Way Group remains totally committed to positively promoting sensible and workable legislation which genuinely improves animal welfare in the countryside. We sincerely appeal to other animal welfare organisations to join us in this quest.”
