New degree course for equine dentists

  • Hartpury College is offering a new degree course in Equine Dental Science

Hartpury College, in collaboration with the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), The British Veterinary Dental Association (BVDA), and the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians, has developed a BSc(Hons) Degree programme in Equine Dental Science.

The new course offers an opportunity to develop specialist scientific and professional skills and knowledge applicable to the health of horses.

The programme allows students to develop technical skills within the laboratory and skills important for handling, caring for and assessing the dental health of horses.

Specialist skills in diagnosis and treatment of designated dental disorders will be a key focus of this award. During their studies students will be involved in the discussion and evaluation of scientific literature and experimental protocols which may form part of module assessments.

Students who successfully complete the award will be exempt from the written component of the BEVA/BVDA Equine Dental Technicians examination but will still need to pass the BEVA/BVDA practical assessment to be able to practice legally as an Equine Dental Technician in the UK.

Following completion of the course at Hartpury students will normally have to undertake an extended period of work experience in order to develop their professional skills portfolio prior to taking the BEVA/BVDA practical assessment.
