Where will the 2024 Olympics be held? Four cities bid for the Games

  • Europe holds three out of the four cities bidding to host the 2024 Olympic Games.

Rome, Paris, Budapest and Los Angeles have all submitted their candidate files to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The deadline for applications was yesterday (Wednesday, 17 February).

“Los Angeles, Rome, Budapest and Paris are all submitting projects fully in line with Olympic Agenda 2020,” said IOC president Thomas Bach.

“It is impressive to see how they have incorporated the Olympic project into the long-term development plans of their city, region and country.

“For all four there is a clear focus on sustainable development, legacy and in particular how the facilities are going to be used after the Olympic Games.”

The IOC 2020 Agenda is a “strategic roadmap” for the future of the Games, made up of 40 recommendations covering areas from changing the bidding process to creating “attractive, modern, TV- and spectator-friendly sports”.

The election of the host city for the 2024 games will take place in September 2017 in Lima, Peru.

The candidature process has three stages and the bidding cities are asked to present Olympic projects that best match their sports, economic, social and environmental long-term planning needs.

IOC’s Jacqueline Barrett added the cities are making use of an “extremely high percentage” of existing and temporary venues.

“The plans received indicate very thoughtful consideration of what the cities and their people need for the future,” she said.

The last time the Games were held in Los Angeles was in 1984, where Great Britain won a host of medals.

The British eventing team — Ginny Leng (Priceless), Ian Stark (Oxford Blue), Tiny Clapham (Windjammer) and Lucinda Green (Regal Realm) — won team silver, with Ginny also taking individual bronze.

Michael Whitaker (Overton Amanda), John Whitaker (Ryans Son), Steven Smith (Shining Example) and Timothy Grubb (Linky) claimed showjumping team silver.
