The Professional Event Riders Association has changed its name to the Event Riders Association (ERA) in a move to make it accessible to riders at all levels.
The association is the world-wide representative body for event riders. It aims to raise the profile of eventing and co-operate with equestrian bodies such as British Eventing and the FEI to deal with issues affecting event riders that may arise.
Emma Hunter, secretary at ERA, says: “We are all singing from the same song sheet. We all want the best for the sport we know and love and for the competitors involved in that sport. Through co-operation, we can achieve the best for all concerned.”
The association was initially formed from a group of top eventers, including William Fox-Pitt and Mary King, with the main goal being to take eventing into the future as a modern, prosperous and dynamic sport that combines challenge, discipline, enjoyment and safety.
Its principle focus is to work towards improved conditions for horses and riders, as well as ensuring the highest standards of sportsmanship.
Emma Hunter explains why the change of name came about: “We want to reflect the fact that the association encompasses all riders at all levels from all countries.
“We are expanding into an eventing club that provides the same representation and benefits for all eventers, whether they are grassroots riders or the Pippa Funnells and William Fox-Pitts of this world.”
She concludes: “Eventing has entered a new era and we feel strongly that is the way ahead.”
