Who will get your vote? Nominations open for FEI awards


  • Do you know a rider who deserves recognition? Who would you most like to see celebrated in the horse world?

    The FEI is looking for nominations for its 2014 awards, known as the Oscars of the equestrian world.

    There are five categories with the winners being flown to Baku, Azerbaijan in December for a gala evening.

    The awards recognise commitment, dedication and courage in equestrian sport around the world.

    Alex Hua Tian (pictured), China’s first event rider to compete at Olympic level won the first Longines Rising Star Award in 2009.

    “It inspired me to go professional, to continue to strive to improve both as a horseman and a trainer, and to promote this amazing sport to other young riders,” he said.

    Alex, 24, is now preparing for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (23 August-7 September) in France.

    “I would encourage everyone to step forward and nominate a person who has really impressed them,” he said.

    Last year’s rising star award went to US showjumper Reed Kessler, the youngest rider at the London 2012 Olympics.

    Nominations are also open for the other four categories. These are:

    Reem Acra Best Athlete – given to the human or equine athlete or combination who over the last 12 months has taken equestrian sport to a new level.

    Against All Odds – rewards people who have pursued their equestrian ambitions despite physical handicap or difficult personal circumstances.

    Best Groom Award – for the best behind-the-scenes team members.

    FEI Solidarity Award – presented to an individual or organisation which has demonstrated skill in expanding equestrian sport.

    The closing date for nominations is 9 September.
