More people are now rehoming rescue horses, according to World Horse Welfare.
“So far already this year (to date) we have rehomed 119 horses, that’s nearly a 53% rise from last year when we had only rehomed 78 horses by now,” said rehoming officer, Tanya Element.
Susan Ridley, who lives in the Scottish borders has rehomed two horses from World Horse Welfare. The most recent, Cappuccino was found starving, covered in lice in a dark, cramped barn, and after a lengthy rehabilitation was rehomed in January.
He is now enjoying his new life as a pleasure competition horse.
“Cappy is a total gentleman, I’ve never had a single problem with him,” said Susan.
But the UK’s growing horse crisis continues to put “incredible strain,” on the charity.
So far this year World Horse Welfare has taken in 166 horses compared to 142 in the same period last year.
The charity said it is still dealing with the fallout from the 76% rise in new and needy horses coming in to rescue centres in 2013 compared to the previous year.
Many of these horses are still looking for new homes.
