Help Horse & Hound support good causes


  • As part of Horse & Hound's 130th birthday celebrations, we will be supporting and promoting "130 equestrian good causes" via regular online round-ups of events being run by the equestrian community

    Driving for Midlands Air Ambulance

    Hereford and District riding club member Pete Finch is driving 100 miles in aid of the Midlands Air Ambulance.

    Pete will drive from Ashleworth to Hay-on-Wye 17 May.

    He will be using a Bennington two-wheeled carriage and four horses.

    Preparing for Rio 

    Australian Olympic event rider, Chris Burton talks about his preparation for Rio 2016 and his quest for Olympic gold, in aid of the Brooke animal charity.

    The event is taking place at Dunsfold Park, Loxhill in Godalming, Surrey on 25 September and will include a jumping demonstration. Tickets cost £30 or £50 for 2.

    Horse and Pony sanctuary receives Lottery funding

    Shy Lowen Horse and Pony Sanctuary in Sefton has received £10,000, from the Big Lottery funding.

    Bernadette Langfield is an equine assisted learning therapist and is Founder of Shy Lowen Horse and Pony Sanctuary.  Bernadette said: “We are so very grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for this grant.

    “Shy Lowen is a small charity with big ambition. First and foremost we are a horse rescue charity, but one with a huge difference— our horses and ponies are cared for and trained by local children.

    “The ‘awards for all’ funding is adding facilities to the site of Shy Lowen so our young people can be safe and secure while helping and undertaking activities. We hope it will encourage even more local young people to become involved with us.”

    Dharmendra Kanani, Big Lottery Fund England Director,said: “Our ‘awards for all’ programme is available to help people in so many ways and this month we see yet more examples of this.”

    Team o’ Tumblers cycle coast-to-coast

    A team of 45 from hunting, eventing, farming and racing are cycling coast-to-coast from Watchet to West Bay in the annual 54 mile Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance challenge on Sunday 18 May. 

    The team includes members from Harry Fry’s yard, Paul Nicholls racing and Colin Tizzard’s Somerset set up.

    Draw for Exmoor ponies 

    The Exmoor Pony Festival is launching a poster competition for schools this Spring with an Exmoor Pony Experience as the top prize.  Artwork with an Exmoor pony theme is wanted for this year’s festival which runs from 9- 17 August.

    Sue McGeever from the Exmoor Pony Society said: “We are delighted to be running a competition to involve schools in the Exmoor Pony Festival and we are hoping for a great turnout of entries from far and wide. The competition will be running throughout the spring so that the winning artwork can be used in the promotional work for the Exmoor Pony Festival in August and a display of the posters will be available for all to see.”
