Hunt offers a unique Mother’s Day treat

  • A Mother’s Day treat with a difference is on offer from the Surrey Union this year — a £100 prize to the winning mother and child duo in the pair class at the annual hunter trials.

Hunt chairman Nigel Morland had the idea when he realised the event coincided with Mother’s Day (30 March) and soon drummed up the prize-money.

“We often see parents and their children enjoy themselves when they come hunting together with the Surrey Union, so the new prize seemed fitting,” Nigel told H&H.

The unique bond that exists between mother and child may be sorely tested as they jump around the 90cm course. Their time will be that of the slowest rider and marks are awarded at specific fences for style, approach and take off. Not an obvious recipe for family harmony.

“It’s a team effort and we plan to share the prize money,” said Sally Mariani, competing on her hunter KP alongside son Jack, 12, riding his coloured mare Tiger Lily.  “Jack has not jumped this height before so I am hoping he will follow me, but he is very competitive.”

Jack is staying quiet for now, he may have his own plans.
