Crowds flock to Newmarket open day [pics]


  • Many Newmarket racing yards opened their doors to the public on Sunday 22 September, giving fans of all ages the chance to meet the equine stars of the racing world

    Racing fans enjoyed going behind the scenes in the “home of horseracing” on Sunday (22 September) at the Newmarket open day.

    Large crowds watched top horses work on Warren Hill in the morning. Among these were stars of the Flat season including John Gosden’s The Fugue (pictured above), owned by the Lloyd-Webbers, who won the Yorkshire Oaks and Irish Champion Stakes recently.

    Others showing off their speed were Riposte, Caspar Netscher, Premio Loco, High Jinx and Elusice Kate (above).

    Popular mare Snow Fairy (below) also paraded for her fans. Trained by Ed Dunlop, she won six Group Ones before she retired in July.

    Visitors of all ages had the chance to look around top yards and meet their equine heroes.

    As well as watching horses go for a swim at Clive Brittain’s yard.

    And the afternoon activities were popular with the Shetland pony Grand National taking centre stage.

    The trainers v jockeys football match also proved entertaining, with the jockeys showing off their agility by winning 3-0. Goals were scored by Neil Callan, Marc Halford and Martin Lane and the team was managed by TV presenter, and racehorse owner, Jeremy Kyle.

    “We were absolutely delighted with the turn out for Betfair Newmarket Open Day,” said Johnno Spence of JSC, the event organiser.

    “It was fantastic to see top horses on the gallops and such a buzz in the yards. We hope we have made lots of money for three fantastic charities, New Astley Club, The British Racing School and the National Horseracing Museum.”
