On the first of two days of BEF Futurity evaluations at Catherston Stud in Hampshire, 2 dressage 2-year-old colts were awarded elite premiums and a further 13 youngsters from across the disciplines received higher firsts.
For the second year running, Aram Gregory’s son of Totilas, Timolin (pictured above as a 2-year-old and below as a yearling at the Futurity), received an elite premium (9.34) at Catherston. He is out of the Sion mare Samira, who was successfully competed by Aram’s wife, the late Olympic dressage rider Jane Gregory.
The evaluators said of Timolin that he “is well proportioned with lots of presence and a balanced and powerful canter. He is very athletic and loose through his body”.
Last year he was the top scoring yearling across all disciplines (and the fourth highest overall score), posting 9.38.
Revolution (Royal Classic/Stedinger) received an elite premium of 9.00 for his dressage rider owner, Ben St John-James. He was bred by Lorraine Aldcroft. The evaluators commented that on his “attractive, elegant modern type,” adding that he is “well balanced and light on his feet”.
Highest scoring eventer of the day was colt foal sports pony, Catherston Bobby Bright (Littledale Bright Star/Number One Guy). He attained a higher first premium of 8.82 for owner/breeder Jennie Loriston-Clarke and was exhibited by Charlotte Dicker.
A three year old colt, Tealequest Rockstar (Rubin’s Black Diamond x Demonstrator) was the top showjumper at Catherston 1 with a higher first of 8.69. He was bred by his owner Sharon Teale from Egham.
It is rare for the 2-year-olds to score most highly as youngsters are often going through a gangly stage, but the evaluators were impressed by “a strong group of 2-year-old dressage horses today and some very exciting prospects for the future”.
