Injured jockey Brian Toomey in induced coma following surgery

  • Jockey Brian Toomey is in an induced coma following surgery for head injuries yesterday (Sunday 7 July).

The conditional jockey sustained serious head injuries in a fall in a hurdle race at Perth racecourse last week (Thursday 4 July). He is currently in a “stable condition” in hospital in Dundee.

“Brian Toomey underwent surgery to reduce swelling and resultant pressure on his brain,” said Lisa Hancock of the Injured Jockeys Fund.

“The surgery went well and Brian remains in a stable condition in an induced coma. It is anticipated he will be kept sedated for the next few days as his progress continues to be monitored.”

Brian was riding Solway Dandy, trained by Lisa Harrison, in the 5pm handicap hurdle when he fell three from home.

Brian is attached to the yard of north Yorkshire trainer Kevin Ryan. His girlfriend, champion conditional jockey Amy Ryan, is Kevin’s daughter.
