The National Vocational Qualifications system offers 3 levels of horsemanship and the qualification is achieved by satisfactory continuous assessment at an approved centre.
Awarding Bodies are 1) BHS 2) Racing and Thoroughbred Breeding Training Board) 3) City and Guilds.
SYLLABUS
Level 1 Horse Care
Most candidates would be capable of achieving this level within 3 months of entering the industry. It is regarded as a foundation level for trainees orinexperienced workers to demonstrate an ability to carry out routine tasks under supervision.You would work in the yard on a daily basis assisting with routine care. This would include feeding, watering, mucking out, changing rugs and maintaining saddlery. Maintaining the yard and surrounds areas. Handling horses from the ground and preparing them for use under supervision.
Level 2 Horse Care
Regarded as the basic qualification for employment in the horse industry and should equip a person to be left unsupervised for limited periods. Normally achieved in 15 to 18 months.
At this level candidates would be expected to develop their personal effectiveness and begin to work more off their own initiative and with less assistance.
The syllabus at this level includes working horses from the ground, determining health and condition, caring for a horse at grass and maintaining its environment and assisting with transportation.
In addition to reaching the required standard for all the mandatory units at level 2 the candidate must chose an optional unit to complete qualification. Options are offered in riding, breeding, driving and assisting with working horses. A non-riding option is also available,
Level 3 Horse Care and Management
Should equip a person to assume responsibility for others and may run a small yard. Candidates should obtain the majority of their training and assessment in the workplace.
The syllabus prepares a candidate to resolve health and condition problems, provide routine care and look after a horse during transport. In addition the course offers opportunities to develop management skills.
The same options availablr for level 2 are available for level 3.
