The British Horse Society is asking motorists to be tolerant and considerate towards any riders on the road after an accident involving a horse and rider in Welham Green in Herts.
Last week, a horse ridden by 12-year-old Lisa Hodges was hit by a speeding motorist in Station Road, inside the 30mph speed limit.Fortunately, rider and horse were not seriously injured.
The BHS estimate that there are more than 3000 accidents a year involving horses on the roads and many are caused by drivers’ impatience.
The BHS offers the following advice to drivers:
Wait until it is safe to overtake and then pass wide and slow (about 15 – 20mph)
Take heed of any signal the rider may give: they may be able to see something that youcan’t.
Remember when driving on country roads: there may be a horse around the next corner
