Thumbs up for Tweseldown

    The massive work done behind the scenes at Tweseldown was revealed to a huge – and grateful – entry this weekend.

    Rodney Powell, who won one of the open intermediate sections there said: “It looked lovely – and boy have they improved it!”

    Bettina Overesch, who started 2002 well with an OI win on her World Games prospect Woodsides Ashby said the new course, built by David Evans with improved going and flow, had “enough questions and some interesting fences”.

    Rob Stevens, who won an intermediate class, said it was “good to be made to think” and Ruth Friend, whose mammoth journey from Carlisle was rewarded by an OI win on Big Thyme, said: “It was great to be able to get up a good gallop here and put the horses in the right frame for the season.”

    Meanwhile, the new novice event at Oasby, Leicestershire, was a huge success, and Poplar Park in Suffolk was rewarded by a high-class entry.

    Leslie Law, the very last cross-country rider of the day, was rewarded for his round, conducted in near darkness and the exhausting swirling wind which had prevailed all weekend, with a win on his British team horse Shear H20 in the first advanced intermediate class of the season.
