Supreme Leader has died at Grange Stud aged 20
Leading national hunt sire, Supreme Leader, has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 20 after covering a mare at Grange Studin Co Tipperary.
By the St Leger winner Bustino, Supreme Leader finished third in the 2000 Guineas and fourth in the Derby before embarking on a stud career which saw him finish among the top 10 NH sires in Britain and Ireland in six of the last seven seasons.
According to the Statistical Record Annuals, he covered 3,416 thoroughbred mares during 14 seasons between 1988 and 2001.
His best know performers were the talented chasers Nick Dundee, What’s Up Boys, winner of the Hennessy Gold Cup, Supreme Glory, who won last season’s Welsh National, and Feathered Leader.
