Welton Crackerjack dies

  • One of the UK’s top eventing stallions, Welton Crackerjack, has been put down aged 28

Sam Barr’s prolific eventing stallion Welton Crackerjack was put down at the Barrs’ Gloucestershire home recently at the age of 28.

The 16hh grey three-quarter Thoroughbred sustained a stifle injury at the end of last year from which he never fully recovered.

The advanced event horse sired Badminton, Burghley and Kentucky CCI winners, including Ginny Elliot’s Welton Houdini. His stock accumulated more than 6,000 horse trials points between them.

He was a universal favourite in the stable and had an incredible zest for life, combined with a wonderful temperament,” said Sam Barr.

Crackerjack was by Welton Gameful, the foundation sire of the Barr’s Welton dynasty, out of a Thoroughbred X Irish Draught mare.

He was the UK’s top eventing sire from 1994 to 2000.
