Champion Sakhee retires

  • The champion racehorse Sakhee has retired to Nunnery Stud after a knee problem prevented a return to the track

Sakhee, the champion older horse of last season, has been retired.

The Godolphin stable announced yesterday (Monday) that Sakhee’s knee problem had meant he could not have a satisfactory preparation for Saturday’s Champion Stakes on the prevailing firm ground.

Sakhee is to stand at Nunnery Stud in Norfolk, under the umbrella of his breeder Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Shadwell Estates.

Last year Sakhee romped away with York’s Juddmonte International and the Arc before going down by a nose to American champion Tiznow in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Belmont.

Simon Crisford, racing manager to Godolphin, said on Monday: “His campaign has been held up by his knee problem on the firm ground. Sakhee has been a great champion for Godolphin, and it is a great shame.

“Hisstunning win in the Arc and brilliant run in the Breeders’ Cup Classic were the highlights for us.”
