Eighteen firefighters were called to rescue a horse that had become trapped in its field gate on a farm in Drem, East Lothian.
Fire crews from North Berwick, Haddington and Newcraighall attended the scene at Camptoun Farm after receiving a call to attend just after 12.45pm last week.
According toher owner, Flopsy a 20-year-old grey mare, got her front leg trapped in the gate after repeatedly pawing at it. In her panic, the mare pulled back ripping the gate of its hinges. Flopsy then attempted to gallop around the field with the gate still attached to her leg before falling over.
Steven Sansbury, Assistant Divisional Officer for the Lothian and Border Fire Brigade said: “Everytime we approached to try and free Flopsy she kicked violently so we retreated until a vet arrivedto sedate her.”
“Once sedated we quickly moved in and used hydraulic cutters to free her. The whole procedure took a matter of minutes, although this rescue was a new one for me.”
Flopsy was soon back on her feet and suffered nothing more than minor cuts and bruises.
