British show jumping enthusiasts will be breathing a sigh of relief following news that the top show jumping stallion Quinten II is to return to British ownership.
The 10-year-old chestnut stallion, who was ridden by Robert Whitaker when he became the inaugural British Open Champion in Sheffield last month, will now be ridden by Robert’s 17-year-old cousin, Ellen Whitaker (pictured).
Top Norwegian rider Geir Gulliksen negotiated buying the son of Darco from Robert’s father John Whitaker during the show, but John’s brother Steven had different ideas.
“John sold Quinteen to Norway, in my opinion too cheaply, so I bought him back for Ellen,” Steven told Horse & Hound. “Hewas too good a horse for England to lose.”
Jacky Wood, chief executive of the BSJA agrees: “I am delighted that such a talented show jumping stallion is to remain in this country and we wish his future rider Ellen the same success that Robert previously enjoyed with him.”
