Devon-based rider Daniel Sibley, 22, was seriously injured in a fall in a novice section at Wilton Horse Trials last Saturday, when his horse fell on him while negotiating an island fence four from home.
He was taken to Salisbury Hospital with head, chest and pelvic injuries and remains in intensive care.
Dr Michael Whitlock, the attending doctor who gave Daniel resuscitation on the course, said: “He was wearing a British helmet to PAS 015 with a rigid outer shell. It almost certainly saved his life.”
Horse and rider had been due to compete at Burgie this week.
According to Salisbury hospital Daniel is making good progress. He has been moved out of intensive care on to a normal ward and is in a “stable” condition.
