The University College of Northampton is giving students the opportunity to combine equine studies with a variety of subjects, ranging from law to dance, by offering the subject as a “minor” in its joint and combinedhonours degree programme.
The equine modules are designed to complement subjects such as earth science and ecology, providing a balance for students wishing to obtain qualifications in environmental science.
Equine modules can also be combined with subjects such as accounting, business, sociology, drama, art, philosophy, marketing, media and industrial archaeology.
Course leader and admissions tutor Sara Coffin says: “Some students who have an interest in horses like the idea of going to university and studying something they enjoy. It’s really varied, some people come in with a science background at A-level, others are interested in doing criminology or history, but most have a definite career in mind.”
The course is suitable for those who want to pursue a career in the equine industry or who simply have an interest in horses. Employment opportunities for graduates arise in feed industries, insurance companies, legal work and manufacturing.
Students take four modules a year in their major subject and two in equine studies. The duration of the course is three years full-time or flexible part-time and the equine modules are based at Moulton College, Northampton.
Compulsory modules include:
- equine industry and feeding
- anatomy and physiology
- health and conditioning
- industry and grassland
- nutrition and parasitology
- behaviour and sports therapy
The entry level for equine students depends on which major subject combination they choose, but it does not assume previous experience of science above GCSE level.
