Scotland’s drivers triumphed in a close contest for the first ever tri-nations friendly at Castle Kennedy Horse Driving Trials.
The competition was open to teams of carriage drivers representing Scotland, Ireland and England, and the Scottish team of Carole Smith, Audrey Barronand Ian Bertam narrowly defeated Ireland.
England’s team was a disappointing third, and, in the words of Flower of Scotland, was sent “homeward tae think again!”
Young Scottish talent
The future is bright for carriage drivingin Scotland, with some really hot talent coming through the club scene.
The junior club class proved an outstanding success, with Hazel Carruthers making her mark. Hazel, 12, from the Chariots of Fire centre near Lockerbie, drove mentor Amanda Saville’s display pony, Tom Tom, immaculately and recorded faster times through the marathon obstacles than most of the novices.
Strong partnership
Husband-and-wife team Andrew and Carole Smith are making a habit of winning their respective classes.
For the second event-running, Carole, a teacher from Lanark, won the novice single pony class with her Connemara mare, Jude, while Andrew headed the novice horses with his Gelderlander, Basil.
